EagleComeback kid.

There are a good number of Bald Eagles that now call Lake Vermilion their summer home. It was not too many years ago when an eagle sighting was a rare overhead treat. But today eagle sightings are a common occurrence. (The mature bird pictured here was perched high in a Frazer Bay island White Pine.) The bird’s recovery is very impressive. Did you know the bald eagle nearly lost its’ 1782 bid to become our national bird?

Yes, the eagle narrowly beat out (by one vote) the wild turkey for the honor. Why does that seem ironic?

Additional information on our magnificent national bird is here.

Now if we could just get the eagle into some voice lessons to improve on its’ “song“.

BlueberryThe Berry That’s Blue.

I was out on one of Lake Vermilion’s 365 islands the other day. As I walked across the typical Vermilion rock outcroppings it was tough not to step on the blueberries. It looks like a darn good crop this year.

In our area of the world the blueberry needs no introduction. But this fruit’s attributes are not widely known. The Wild Blueberry Association of North America (WBANA) is trying to change that.

They have a website called the “Power of Blue”. They note several interesting facts about this berry.

Did you know the blueberry is the number one antioxidant when compared to other commercially available fruits and vegetables? It beats out broccoli, spinach, garlic, kale, strawberries, and the ever popular brussell sprout. The site also claims the blueberry may 1) be anti-aging, 2) assist cancer prevention, 3) control urinary tract infections, 4) promote vision health, and 5) possibly reduce age-related brain damage, i.e. Alzheimers and other dementia-type diseases.

Not a bad resume for our little wild berry.

So next time you’re out in the Lake Vermilion woods and you see a clump of blue down at your feet, take a minute to enjoy a few.

And feel the power of blue.
