New ice

Ice Age (2003-2004 edition)

Ice. Snow. I know everyone is acutely aware we now have ice and snow. But I believe it cannot go without written confirmation. This is one of those annual lake defining events.

The lake is freezing over and the facts must be recorded.

Today, a number of Lake Vermilion’s smaller bays had a fresh ice layer. With cold temperatures in the forecast, we may see additional ice surfaces extending into the larger bays.

Stay tuned.

November lake

It’s obvious now the waters of the lake are not what they were. It’s an annual cycle. A few short months ago the water was welcome and enticing relief from hot and humid days. And now in November it is dark, cold, and even threatening.

I was on the lake late last week and the only activity seemed to be the contractors rushing to make arrangements for the pending freeze-up. There are hints the right combination of calm and cold air will soon have the lake skimmed with ice. Even this morning, the smaller bays have icy rims.

With snow in the forecast, it looks like winter has found us again.
