One way to overcome the winter blues is to put a new plan into action. Why not plan to plant a tree? Or maybe a bunch of trees!
The North St. Louis Soil and Water Conservation District is an organization that offers a number of beneficial services for area property owners. One of the functions of the North St. Louis SWDC is their annual tree sale! Many tree species are offered with prices starting at $25 for 30 bare-root trees.
Start planning your tree planting project now because orders (order form, .pdf file) must be placed before April 15, 2005.

As confirmation that it is possible to live, work, and breathe at minus 40 degrees Fahrenheit, please note the above photo.
I should report that this paltry -40 degree outdoor temperature put Cook, MN a considerable distance up the thermal leader board when, on that same morning, the fair town of Embarrass, MN recorded an impressive -54. That bog fringed town was quite possibly aided in its' recovery from the freeze by the uninvited attention of an overwhelming media moment in the sun.
Typically, local residents do not intentially seek the notoriety sometimes given to these natural events.
But as a testimony to their resolve the hearty Northlanders usually find a way to tolerate unmerited heat.
Northern Minnesota (among other places) has been on an arctic roller coaster the last several days. (The chart shows actual area temperatures from noon last Thursday to noon today.) The frigid temperatures have crystallized most outdoor activity on or near Lake Vermilion since late last week. Some might claim this weather is one of the reasons we live here. Others might suggest it's one of the reasons we should leave. Accommodating a freeze like this is really just a matter of preparation, common sense, and good old-fashioned bundling up.
We're headed for zero plus tomorrow! Maybe it'll snow!
The St. Louis County Planning Commission will conduct a public hearing related to the Lake Vermilion Management Plan. The hearing will held at Fortune Bay on Thursday, January 13th at 2:30 PM. This in an opportunity to express your thoughts and opinions. The County website dedicated to the Plan is here.
"It was cold out there... bitter, biting, cutting, piercing, hyperborean, marmoreal cold, and there were all these Minnesotans running around outdoors, happy as lambs in the spring." - Charles Kuralt
