Walleye fryBaby walleyes.

The Pike River hatchery should be in full production within the next couple of weeks. The DNR has an annual egg-gathering program to acquire the “ingredients” for growing walleye fry. Lots of walleye fry. Approximately 80+ million new walleyes result from the annual “milking”. A good portion of these fish are released into Lake Vermilion but many are used for stocking programs in other Minnesota lakes. (The walleye rebuilding program for Red Lake is receiving Lake Vermilion walleye fry.)

This facility and its’ Spring activities are open to the public. I was not able to get specifics on when the facility will open this year but I will post an update when the information is available. For more details on this interesting program read this article in the Sportsman’s Club of Lake Vermilion newsletter or call the DNR Fisheries Division at 218/365-7280.
