Happy Holidays To All! (Let there be cookies for everyone!)
"There is around 5-1/2" to 7" of ice on many parts of Vermilion, but there are also spots out on the main lake and in narrows that only have a couple of inches of ice. There is around 8" to 14" of snow on top of the ice so the ice making process has been slowed down considerably. There is lots of slush on many of the smaller bays and also close to shorelines. Hopefully the cold front moving in this weekend will eliminate that problem.
I have been doing fairly well fishing for walleyes when I have managed to get out there in the mornings. 9:00am to noon has been my best bite. The evening bite has also been good according to the reports that I have been getting. I have been doing my best by fishing in 12' to 20' of water. Perch colored 1/8 oz. spoons or Jigging Rap type jigs baited with a minnow head or a white/glow Demon Jig with a medium rainbow chub have been working very well for me."
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is accepting public input (through the end of the year) on the proposed Lake Vermilion State Park as noted in this press release. Submit your thoughts on the forms that start here.
Also, Mark Holsten, (our current DNR Commissioner) has assembled an Advisory Task Force to identify the future impact of the proposed park.
