MN DNR Lake Vermilion Update.

The following is from a Minnesota DNR News Release that details the results of the 2003 Lake Vermilion Net Survey:

“During the 2003 DNR netting assessment, the walleye catch was 15.4 per net. The mean size of walleye was 13.9 inches, which is the largest mean size ever observed. This was also the first year of the 24-36 inch protected slot regulation for northern pike, and northern pike harvest was the lowest ever observed due to the new regulation. Walleye harvest in 2003 was the highest ever observed at an estimated 95,850 pounds. While some fluctuation in year-to-year harvest is expected, biologists have determined that long-term walleye harvest on Vermilion should not exceed 65,000 pounds per year. The mean length of harvested walleye in 2003 was 14.6 inches.”
