The Red Lake Story.

The fall and rise of Minnesota’s Red Lake walleye fishery is quite a success story. Lake Vermilion is tied to the story in that the recovery of the walleye population is the result of walleye eggs harvested at the Pike River Hatchery. The Grand Forks (North Dakota) Herald has published a timeline related to the story.

The magnitude of the turnaround might be summed up with this entry from the Fall of 2005: “Annual netting assessments in tribal waters produce nearly 1,500 walleyes, compared with four in 1996.”
