Lake Vermilion in FebruaryOn The Lake.

Saturday was a good day to get on the lake. Although a brisk westerly wind remained, the temperatures had moderated from the less than zero category.

The lake is thick with ice. I saw no hint of poor surface conditions and that included the absence of any slush. There are areas of bare ice and minimal snow. The downwind side of most land features was where the most snow was found.

I saw glimpses of activity… a few snowmobiles, a couple of cross country skiers, and some ice shelters complete with determined fishermen.

(The photo was taken from the northern shore of Norwegian Bay looking towards the late afternoon sun.)
