Pike River Dam 2009.
If you know Lake Vermilion then you’re aware of Pike Bay, the Pike River, and the Pike River Dam.
When you exit Highway 169 just south of Tower, MN by turning onto County Road 77 you cross the Pike River at the dam just up the road from that intersection.
I think it’s one of those “Do the local people notice the scenery?” kind of places. (View the location here.)
As with any gushing waterway, the sights and sounds immediately command your total attention and whatever it was that consumed your thoughts as you traveled on the road are placed on pause. The location is not identified as an official “wayside rest stop” but it sure has all the elements to qualify as one.
If you’ve never paused at the Pike River Dam during the Winter thaw, you should.
Love that photo!!! the pines in the foreground against the white snow speak to up north. We drive by the Pike River Dam on the way to the cabin and it’s a friendly reminder, thanks!!
