Here are a few lake facts for your Twitter followers or Facebook friends.  Did you know…

Minnesota waters flow 3 directions:  1)  North to Hudson Bay in Canada  2)  East to the Atlantic Ocean  3)  South to the Gulf of Mexico.  •  Minnesota has 11,842 lakes larger than 10 acres.  4 Minnesota counties have no lakes at all:  Mower, Olmsted, Pipestone, and Rock Counties.  •  Minnesota’s most common lake names are:  Mud, Long, Rice, Bass, Round, Horseshoe, Twin, Island, Johnson, and Spring.  •  Lake Vermilion is Minnesota’s 5th largest lake.  •  Lake Vermilion has 290 miles (1.53 million feet) of shoreline.  •  The deepest natural lake in Minnesota is Lake Saganaga in Cook County at 240 feet deep.  Lake Vermilion is 76 feet deep.  •  Comparing the size of a few area lakes:  You could fit Ash Lake into Elbow Lake 2.5 times.  You could fit Elbow Lake into Pelican Lake almost 7 times.  You could fit Pelican Lake into Lake Vermilion 3.5 times.  You could fit Lake Vermilion into Lake Superior 502 times!
